Uvari is a coastal village in Thisayanvilai[ Taluk, Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu, India. According to Tamil history, the citizens of Uvari were called Bharathar's who are all fishermans of the Neithal (ocean land) World. Uvari's historical name was Obeer patanam.which was believed to be noted in holy bible in king Solomon's period. It was ruled by the Pandyan dynasty.

In the 1530s, Portuguese and Spanish missionaries from Goa which includes Saint Francis Xavier arrived here and converted many Bharathars who are Fishermans to the Roman Catholic christian religion. The Portuguese priests, acting as godfathers, baptized them in the name of Lord and gave them surnames such as Fernando to the converted. Pandya ret

Being shaped like a ship, the church's distinctive architecture is well-known. Winter (October to March) is the greatest season to travel to this place because of the mild and pleasant weather.

St. Anthony's Church is a well-known destination for Christian pilgrims; it has significant religious significance. St. Anthony of Padua, who is revered as the patron saint of misplaced and stolen property, is the subject of the church's dedication.

The old church in this location was built 150 years ago, but over the years, coastal erosion has caused some damage to the original building. Following this, the locals made the decision to erect a new church in the same location. In the style of a ship with an airplane flying above it, this was built in the 1940s.

St. Anthony's Church is situated on the Bay of Bengal's coastlines, which is a sight to behold. Beautiful views of the sea and the surrounding landscape may be seen from the chapel.

The Sri Suyambulinga Swami Temple is quiet and surrounded by palm and coconut trees. Hindus consider the Sri Suyambulinga Swami Temple to be a holy site. The greatest time to travel is in the winter (October to February) when the temperature is cool and comfortable.

The temple, which is situated by the water, provides breathtaking views of the Bay of Bengal. The temple is further enhanced by the luxuriant vegetation that surrounds it. This is the only temple where Lord Siva receives sunlight throughout the entire Margazhi month (December through January).

The temple serves as a venue for people to connect with their history and heritage, which has cultural significance. Throughout the year, the temple hosts a number of festivals and events.

In 1581, the grotto was built into a big Church, when Fr John de Salanova was the Parish Priest of Queen of Heaven Church, Manapad. The captain, who was devoted to the veneration of the Holy Cross, implored and entrusted the safety of the vessel and that of the crew to Christ. He made a vow that he would construct a cross from a portion of the splintered mast and have it planted on the shore where they alighted in safety. By chance, the vessel, after having drifted for several days, sought haven at the port of Kulasekharapatnam.

The Brihadeeshwara Temple is a Must-Visit for Every History Buff: A Guide for Travelers

Brihadeeshwara Temple  Route map

Brihadeeshwara Temple (Peruvudaiyar Kovil) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva located in Thanjavur in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is also known as Periya Kovil, RajaRajeswara Temple and Rajarajesvaram. It is one of the largest temples in India and is an example of Dravidian architecture during the Chola period. Built by emperor Raja Raja Chola I and completed in 1010 AD, the temple turned 1000 years old in 2010. The temple is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Great Living Chola Temples”, with the other two being the Brihadeeswarar Temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara temple.

The temple stands amidst fortified walls that were probably added in the 16th century. The vimanam (temple tower) is 216 ft (66 m) high and is the tallest in the world. The Kumbam (the apex or the bulbous structure on the top) of the temple is carved out of a single rock and weighs around 80 tons.

There is a big statue of Nandi (sacred bull), carved out of a single rock measuring about 16 ft (4.9 m) long and 13 ft (4.0 m) high at the entrance. The entire temple structure is made out of granite, the nearest sources of which are about 60 km to the west of temple. The temple is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu.

History

A spectrum of dravidian temple styles continued to develop from the fifth to the ninth century over the Chalukya era rule as evidenced in Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal, and then with the Pallava era as witnessed at Mamallapuram and other monuments. Thereafter, between 850 and 1280, Cholas emerged as the dominant dynasty. The early Chola period saw a greater emphasis on securing their geopolitical boundaries and less emphasis on architecture. In the tenth century, within the Chola empire emerged features such as the multifaceted columns with projecting square capitals. This, states George Michell, signaled the start of the new Chola style. This South Indian style is most fully realized both in scale and detail in the Brihadeshwara temple built between 1003 and 1010 by the Chola king Rajaraja I.Cultural events

The Brihadishvara temple at Thanjavur is the site of annual dance festivals around February, around the Mahashivratri. Major classical Indian dance form artists, as well as regional teams, perform their repertoire at this Brahan Natyanjali festival over 10 days.

Temple Timeline

The much celebrated ‘Ponnambalam’ (temple with golden roof) at Thillai (Chidambaram) was just a few hours of journey away.

Thiruvarur, the most important ‘Sapta Vitanka Sthalam’, which had the patronage of the Cholas right from the days of Manuneedhi Cholan and Musukuntha Cholan, was also nearby.

So were numerous temples referred to as ‘paadal Petra Sthalangals’ – temples where the Saivite saints Appar, Sundarar, Sambandhar and Manickavasagar had sung Thevaram hymns (religious hymns praising the deeds of Lord Shiva).

Car festival

The Temple car was rolled out on its trial run from opposite to Sri Ramar temple on 20 April 2015 witnessed by a large number of people.Nine days later, the maiden procession of the temple car was held. This was the first such procession in this temple held in the past hundred years, according to news reports.

Location

The Peruvudaiyar Temple is located in the city of Thanjavur, about 350 kilometres (220 mi) southwest of Chennai. The city is connected daily to other major cities by the network of Indian Railways, Tamil Nadu bus services and the National Highways 67, 45C, 226 and 226 Extn.

The city and the temple though inland, are at the start of the Kaveri River delta, thus with access to the Bay of Bengal and through it to the Indian Ocean. Along with the temples, the Tamil people completed the first major irrigation network in the 11th century for agriculture, for movement of goods and to control the water flow through the urban center.
