Tiruvannamalai Temple: A Journey into the Heart of Shiva's Fiery Abode

Tiruvannamalai:       Route map

The Annamalaiyar Temple, also known as Arunachalesvara Temple, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located at the base of the Annamalai Hills in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, India. It holds immense significance in Shaivism and is one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalas, representing the element of fire (Agni).

ЁЯЫХHistorical and Architectural Significance

The temple's origins trace back to the 9th century CE under the Chola dynasty, with subsequent contributions from the Pallavas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara rulers, and Nayaks. Spanning approximately 25 acres, the temple complex showcases classic Dravidian architecture. Its eastern Rajagopuram stands at 66 meters, making it one of the tallest temple towers in India.

The temple houses over 100 shrines, a thousand-pillared hall, and numerous intricately carved sculptures. It also contains more than 450 stone inscriptions detailing its rich history and patronage.

ЁЯПЫ️ Architectural Grandeur
The temple complex spans approximately 10 hectares, making it one of the largest in India. It features four massive gateway towers (gopurams), with the eastern tower, or Rajagopuram, standing at 66 meters (216.5 feet), making it the third tallest gopuram in the world. The temple houses numerous shrines and halls, including the thousand-pillared hall built during the Vijayanagara dynasty.

A unique spiritual practice associated with the temple is Girivalam, the circumambulation of the Annamalai hill, covering a distance of approximately 14 kilometers. Devotees undertake this pilgrimage, especially on full moon nights, seeking spiritual benefits.

ЁЯФ▒ Spiritual Importance and Legends
According to legend, Parvati playfully closed Shiva's eyes, plunging the universe into darkness. To restore light, Shiva appeared as a massive column of fire atop the Annamalai Hills. This event signifies the temple's association with the fire element.

Another legend narrates a dispute between Brahma and Vishnu over supremacy. Shiva manifested as an endless flame, challenging them to find his origin. While Vishnu conceded defeat, Brahma falsely claimed success, leading Shiva to curse him, resulting in the absence of Brahma temples on Earth.

ЁЯХЙ️ Rituals and Festivals
Girivalam (Circumambulation): Devotees perform a 14 km circumambulation of the Annamalai Hills, especially on full moon days, seeking spiritual merit.

Karthigai Deepam: Celebrated in November-December, this festival involves lighting a massive beacon atop the hill, symbolizing Shiva's fiery manifestation. The event attracts millions of pilgrims annually.

ЁЯХ░️ Visiting Hours
The temple operates daily with the following timings:

Morning: 5:30 AM to 12:30 PM

Evening: 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM

It's advisable to check for any changes in timings during festivals or special occasions.

ЁЯУН Getting There from Jaipur
By Air: Fly from Jaipur to Chennai International Airport (~190 km from Tiruvannamalai).

By Train: Travel from Jaipur to Vellore (~80 km from Tiruvannamalai), then proceed by road or local train.
