• The temple has been in existence for over 2,000 years and was expanded by various South Indian dynasties, including:
• The Cholas (notably Raja Raja Chola I and Kulothunga Chola I).
• The Pandyas, Vijayanagar kings, and Nayakas.
• Ancient Tamil Sangam literature and several inscriptions in the temple date back to the Chola period (10th century CE).
  

Natyanjali Dance Festival

• The temple is famous for the Natyanjali Festival, celebrated during Maha Shivaratri, where Bharatanatyam dancers from around the world perform in honor of Lord Nataraja.

Rituals and Worship

• The temple follows Vedic and Agamic traditions, with six daily poojas performed by Dikshitar priests—a unique community of hereditary priests.
• Abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the Nataraja idol is done with:
• Panchagavya (five sacred elements from cows).
• Sandalwood paste, turmeric, and holy water.
• Devotees also worship the Govindaraja Perumal shrine, highlighting the coexistence of Shaivism and Vaishnavism.
