Arulmigu Peruvudaiyar Thirukovil - The Majestic Chola Architectural Marvel and UNESCO World Heritage Temple Built by Rajendra Chola I

Arulmigu Peruvudaiyar Thirukovil     Route map

Arulmigu Peruvudaiyar Thirukovil, located in Gangaikonda Chozhapuram in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu, is one of the greatest architectural marvels of the Chola dynasty. It was built in the 11th century CE by Rajaraja Chola I’s son, Rajendra Chola I, to commemorate his victorious expedition to the Ganges River and his coronation as “Gangaikonda Cholan.”

This temple is often called the "Great Living Chola Temple", and along with Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur and Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

👉 Historical Significance
  • The temple was commissioned by Rajendra Chola I in the early 11th century as part of his new capital, Gangaikonda Cholapuram, founded to celebrate his northern conquests, including the Palas and the Ganges region.
  • The name "Gangaikonda Cholapuram" translates to "City of the Chola who brought the Ganges", symbolizing both conquest and spiritual tribute.

👉 Architectural Features
  • The towering Vimana (tower) stands at approximately 182 feet, dazzlingly second in height only to its Thanjavur counterpart.
  • Unlike the robust, straight contours of the Tanjore temple, this temple’s vimana features a concave, slightly curved profile, lending a graceful appearance—historically seen as a respectful tribute to the elder Raja Raja Chola I.
  • The plan follows Dravidian temple design: a high platform (perunkoil), sanctum, Nandi-mandapam, mukhamandapam, mahamandapam, and connecting antrala, surrounded by prakara for circumambulation.

👉 Sculptural & Artistic Excellence
  • The temple is richly ornamented with sculptures of deities, mythological scenes, and intricate carvings that surpass even the earlier temple at Thanjavur in finesse.
  • The Shivalinga inside is one of the largest in South India, and the Nandi statue in the courtyard reflects sunlight directly into the sanctum, showcasing both artistic detail and engineering skill.

👉 Modern Relevance & Conservation
  • The temple remains actively worshipped and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
  • Its importance continues to be recognized—recent efforts include developing the historic Cholagangam tank near the site for tourism and farming, and establishing a museum for Rajendra Chola I nearby.

👉 Religious Significance
  • Dedicated to Lord Shiva as “Peruvudaiyar” (The Great Lord).
  • Daily pujas and festivals like Maha Shivaratri attract thousands of devotees.
  • The temple is considered a "Padal Petra Sthalam" (sung by Tamil Shaivite saints).

👉 UNESCO World Heritage Status
The temple is part of the “Great Living Chola Temples” UNESCO listing due to:
Outstanding architectural achievement
Preservation of Chola art, culture, and religious practices for over 1,000 years
Continuing active worship

👉 How to Reach
  • Nearest Town: Jayankondam (8 km away)
  • Nearest Railway Station: Ariyalur (30 km)
  • Nearest Airport: Tiruchirappalli International Airport (125 km)
  • Accessible by road from Chennai (250 km) and Thanjavur (70 km).

👉 Visiting Tips
  • Best time to visit: November to February (cooler weather)
  • Dress modestly as it’s an active place of worship
  • Photography is allowed in outer areas but restricted inside the sanctum.
