Srivilliputhur Andal Temple, Virudhunagar – A Comprehensive Exploration of Its Legends, Architecture, Festivals, History, and Divine Significance

Andal Temple - Srivilliputhur    👉 Route map

The Srivilliputhur Andal Temple is a famous Hindu temple in Srivilliputhur, located in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Goddess Andal, one of the 12 Alvars (devotees of Lord Vishnu) who was born in Srivilliputhur and is worshipped here as the wife of Lord Ranganatha. The temple is considered one of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred abodes of Vishnu) and is also known for its unique architecture.

💥Overview & Significance

  • The Srivilliputhur Andal Temple is located in Srivilliputhur, a town in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu.
  • It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, which are the most sacred Vishnu temples in the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
  • The main deity is Vishnu, worshipped here as Vatapatrasayi (or Vadapatrasayi) and his consort Lakshmi is worshipped as Andal.
  • Srivilliputhur is especially significant in Vaishnava bhakti tradition: it is the birthplace of Periyalvar and his foster-daughter Andal

💢Legend and Mythology

  • According to tradition, Andal was found under a tulasi (basil) plant in the garden of Periyalvar, who treated her as his daughter.
  • As a child, Andal used to wear the garland meant for the deity (Vatapatrasayi) before offering it. When Periyalvar discovered this, he was distressed, but it is believed Lord Vishnu appeared in his dream and asked that the garland worn by Andal always be offered to Him.
  • Andal is considered to have merged with Lord Ranganatha (Vishnu) later in her life.

💣Architecture

  • The temple is built in the Dravidian architectural style
  • One of its most striking features is a very tall gopuram (tower). According to the Virudhunagar district’s official tourism page, the tower is 192 feet tall with 12 storeys
  • There are two main shrines: one for Vatapatrasayi (Vishnu) and another for Andal with Rangamannar (a form of Vishnu).
  • The temple complex has richly carved pillars, ancient inscriptions (from Pandya rulers), a large temple tank, and a wooden/stone “mahamandapam” (great hall).
  • In front of the flagstaff (dwajasthambam) mandapam, there are monolithic pillars with detailed sculpture work.

Festivals & Rituals

  • Aadi Pooram (also called Aadipooram) Chariot Festival is a major event at this temple.
Other important festivals:
  • Panguni Thirukkalyana Utsavam (divine marriage) is celebrated.
  • Thiruvadipooram (Andal’s birth or divine manifestation) is also significant.
Daily worship and rituals are performed according to Vaishnava traditions.

💅Cultural Importance

  • Andal is one of the most celebrated female saint-poets of the Vaishnavite tradition. Her hymns like Tiruppavai are central to Tamil devotional literature.
  • The temple’s gopuram has become symbolic: the gopuram of the Srivilliputhur Andal Temple is actually the emblem of the Government of Tamil Nadu
  • The temple is also important culturally because of its connection to the Alvars, especially Periyalvar and Andal, who contributed to the Nalayira Divya Prabandham (the 4000 Tamil verses).

💫Location & Accessibility

  • Address: Mada Street, Mangapuram, Srivilliputhur, Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu, India.
  • The temple is about 45 km from Virudhunagar town
  • It is also ~80 km from Madurai
  • Temple timings (approx): According to YouTube sources, the temple is open from 6:00 AM – 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM.

🌌Special Features

  • The temple has wall paintings depicting the 108 Divya Desams (other important Vishnu temples).
  • The wooden chariot/car used in the Aadipooram festival is quite massive and old, with 9 huge wheels
  • The sanctum for Vatapatrasayi is a “maadakkovil” — meaning part of the shrine is elevated; for example, there is a shrine for Lakshmi Narasimha on the ground floor, and above (after climbing steps) is the main shrine.
  • The vimana (tower above the sanctum) over Andal is called the Thiruppavai Vimanam, named after her famous hymn Tiruppavai.

🔥Historical Background

  • The temple has inscriptions from Pandya kings, indicating its historical importance.
  • According to local records, Thirumalai Nayak (Nayak king) and Rani Mangammal made significant additions to the temple structure.
  • The present-day gopuram is believed to date from later (Nayak) times, given its scale and style.

🌟Spiritual & Devotional Importance

  • Andal is revered not just as a goddess but as a mystic poet. Her works express deep devotion and love for Vishnu; many Vaishnavas consider her as an incarnation of Bhudevi (Earth Goddess).
  • Devotees believe that Andal’s prayers (Pasurams) bring spiritual merit, and many recite her hymns during Aadi Pooram and other festivals.
  • The daily practice of Thiruppavai (a set of 30 verses by Andal) is especially common among worshippers here.

🌀Tourist Information & Tips

  • Best time to visit: During festival times like Aadipooram (which usually falls in the Tamil month of Aadi) for vibrant celebrations.
  • Photography: The temple’s gopuram, stone carvings, and murals offer great photo opportunities.
  • Dress code: As a Vaishnava temple, modest traditional attire is preferred.
