Paadal Petra Sthalam: This is one of the 275 Shiva temples glorified in 7th-century Tevaram hymns by saints like Sundarar.
Legend of the Crocodile and Rebirth: According to tradition, a crocodile swallowed a boy bathing in the temple tank. Sundarar Nayanar sang hymns here, and Shiva caused the crocodile to disgorge the boy after three years – an event celebrated annually during Panguni Uththiram as Mudalai Vaai Pillai Utsavam.
Dakshina Kashi: Temple is considered the “Kashi of the South,” with a belief that visiting Avinashi grants half the spiritual benefit of Kashi.

🔸 Etymology & Legend
The word Avinashi means “imperishable”.
According to Hindu legend, a young boy was swallowed by a crocodile while bathing in the temple tank. The saint Sundarar, on his way to Kongu Nadu, stopped at the temple and sang devotional hymns. Miraculously, Lord Shiva revived the boy, and the crocodile released him unharmed.
This divine event gave the temple its name and spiritual importance. This miracle is celebrated during the Mudalai Vaai Pillai Utsavam.

The temple is glorified in Thevaram by Saivite saints like Appar, Sundarar, and Sambandar, making it one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams.
Referred to as "Dakshina Kashi" (Southern Kashi) due to its spiritual potency.
Built during the Chola Dynasty, with expansions by Nayaks in the 16th century.
Spans 5 acres, surrounded by a massive rectangular stone wall.
The temple has two gopurams:
