Legend of the Crocodile and Rebirth: According to tradition, a crocodile swallowed a boy bathing in the temple tank. Dakshina Kashi: Temple is considered the “Kashi of the South,” with a belief that visiting Avinashi grants half the spiritual benefit of Kashi.

📜Historical & Mythological Background
🔸 Etymology & Legend
The word Avinashi means “imperishable”.

According to Hindu legend, a young boy was swallowed by a crocodile while bathing in the temple tank. The saint Sundarar, on his way to Kongu Nadu, stopped at the temple and sang devotional hymns. Miraculously, Lord Shiva revived the boy, and the crocodile released him unharmed.

This divine event gave the temple its name and spiritual importance. This miracle is celebrated during the Mudalai Vaai Pillai Utsavam.
🔸 Mention in Sacred Texts
The temple is glorified in Thevaram by Saivite saints like Appar, Sundarar, and Sambandar, making it one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams.

Referred to as "Dakshina Kashi" (Southern Kashi) due to its spiritual potency.
