Athirappilly Waterfalls, often referred to as the "Niagara of India," is the largest waterfall in Kerala, India. Located in the Athirappilly Panchayat of Chalakudy Taluk in Thrissur District, it cascades from a height of approximately 81.5 feet (24.8 meters) along the Chalakudy River, which originates from the Western Ghats and flows through the Sholayar Ranges .


🌿 Natural Beauty & Biodiversity

The falls are nestled within the Athirappilly-Vazhachal forest range, a biodiverse area home to various flora and fauna. The region supports endangered species such as the Indian elephant, Bengal tiger, and lion-tailed macaque. Notably, all four South Indian hornbill species—the Great Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Malabar Grey Hornbill, and Indian Grey Hornbill—can be found here

The Chalakudy River's riparian ecosystem supports 85 species of freshwater fish, with 35 being endemic. The area is recognized as an Important Bird Area by the International Bird Association

Best Time to Visit: Monsoon season (June–September) offers a dramatic view of the falls, while the cooler months (October–February) provide a more relaxed experience .

Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM IST. Note that entry is not permitted after 5:00 PM for safety reasons .

Entry Fees:

Indian Adults: ₹50

Indian Children (5–13 years): ₹10

Foreign Nationals: ₹200

Parking: ₹30 for cars, ₹10 for two-wheelers .


Facilities: Basic amenities include restrooms, snack stalls, and drinking water stations. The area is maintained by the Forest Development Agency Vazhachal Division 


🚶 Activities

Trekking: There are designated trekking routes that lead to the base of the falls, where visitors can enjoy the misty spray of water up close. The trek is relatively easy and can be undertaken by people of all ages, although it's recommended to wear proper trekking shoes as the terrain can get slippery, especially during the monsoon.

Swimming & Photography: Visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim in the stream that flows below, offering a perfect way to unwind. The breathtaking lush greenery of the region makes one feel relaxed.

By Air: The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, approximately 55 km away.

By Train: Chalakudy Railway Station is about 30 km from the falls.

By Road: Athirappilly is well-connected by road from major cities in Kerala. Public buses and taxis are available from Kochi and Thrissur .
