Arulmigu Annamalaiyar Temple, known as Arulmigu Arunchaleswarar Temple, is beautifully situated at the foothills of a 2668 feet high hill in Tiruvannamalai, a holy city in South India and one that can bring salvation if you think about it. The temple is a fine example of South Indian (Dravidian) architecture and sculpture.

According to the inscriptions written in this temple, this temple was built during the period of the early Chola kings (9th century AD), expanded during the period of the later Cholas, Hoysala (Bhosala) kings, and Vijayanagarar Nayakar kings, and The temple was built with a row of stone pillars and sub shrines of many deities including Amman shrine, 9 towers, 5 praharas, many mandapas, and sanctum sanctorums with grand our structures. 

The temple is maintained by the Hindu Religious Charities Department. Throughout the year many festivals, worships and charitys grents are held in this temple. Innumerable Siddhas from different cities and towns have come to this city and settled down. Ramanar, Sesathri Swamigal, Visiri Swamigal, Guru Namachivayar, Kukai Namachivayar etc. are notable among them. Their tombs are located on the Kriwala Path.

Origins: Initial sacred site dates back to 7th century CE (Pallava era); current stone structure mainly built by Cholas in 9th century CE.

Expansion: Enhanced significantly by Vijayanagara dynasty (14th–16th century), including towering gopurams and the grand thousand-pillared mandapam.

Cultural Accolades: Celebrated by saint-poets like Appar, Sambandar, Manikkavacakar; mentioned as a Paadal Petra Thalam in the canonical Thevaram.

Eastern Rajagopuram:

Tower: 11 stories, ~66 m (217 ft), granite base 135×98 ft

Built by Krishnadevaraya, finished by Sevappa Nayaka in the 16th century.

Northern Ammani Amman Gopuram: 171 ft, 9 tiers, built by a devotee monk Ammani Amman.

Notable Features: Thousand-pillared hall with intricate carvings, Pathala Lingam (subterranean shrine linked to Ramana Maharshi), multiple sacred tanks (Agni Tirtha, Brahma Teertham, Siva Ganga Teertham).

Poojas: Six daily rituals — from morning Ukshakala (5:30 AM) to night Arthajama (9:00 PM).

Karthigai Brahmotsavam (Karthigai Deepam): 10-day festival culminating with a huge ghee lamp atop Arunachala Hill, drawing ~3 million pilgrims.

🔄 Girivalam – Circle of Devotion
