Marudhamalai Murugan Temple – Temple of Murugan on the Hill of Medicinal Trees and Spiritual Majesty!

Subramanya swamy temple is situated in Coimbatore District, Perur Zone, 15 kms from Coimbatore town in the sprawling beauty of western ghats at Maruthamalai. It is 741 Meter above the mean sea level with seven level raja gopuram adding to its magnificance. 

This most prominent temple of the kongu zone is hailed by saint kachiyappa munivar who have sung the praise of maruthamalai in the literature Perur Puranam. This temple was first established by kongu cholas, and further adomed by kings of Vijayanagara and kongu provinces. 

It is in existence since the 9th century as it is evident from people worshipping Lord Subramanya in the names Maruthachala, Maruthavaraiyar, Maruthappan and Maruthaiyan. Even today, it stands as the land mark of Coimbatore. Perched atop a hill in the Western Ghats, the temple is celebrated for its spiritual significance, natural beauty, and serene environment.


📜 History & Legends
  • Believed to have been built in the 12th century during the Chola era, with literary mentions going back to the Sangam period via Purananuru.
  • The name Marudhamalai means “hill of Marudham trees” (Terminalia arjuna), after which the hill is named.
  • Major legend: Pambatti Siddhar, a serpent-healer sage, meditated here. Murugan appeared and caused water to stream from a tree’s roots, inspiring the deity’s name Marudhachala-pathi or Marudhajalapati.
  • A cave and tunnel are attributed to the Siddhar, connecting his meditation spot to the sanctum

🏛️ Architecture & Sacred Spots
  • Built in traditional Dravidian style, the temple features a towering gopuram, granite sanctum, and various mandapams.
  • Deity: A self-manifested, 5-ft tall granite idol of Murugan facing east, holding a vel and rod.
  • Sacred springs: Maruda Theertham, Skanda Theertham, and Kanni Theertham around the hill believed to possess medicinal healing powers.

  • The Golden Chariot procession takes place regularly in evenings around the temple

  • Reachable via Gandhipuram by state buses (Nos.70, 70A, 70B, etc.); from Adivaram, devotees can walk up the steps or take temple minibuses (~₹10).
  • Private vehicles may be restricted during festivals or due to wildlife vigilance; last vehicle access by 7 PM.
  • Facilities include:
  • Drinking RO water points (500–1500 L capacity) .
  • Free shoe storage at the foothill.
  • Mini-bus temple service to the hilltop (₹10) .
  • Ear-piercing room, tonsure shed, “Thulabharam” weighing prayers.
  • Golden chariot booking (~₹2000 per devotee).
  • Basic toilets (10 each) and first-aid.
  • Temple-owned cottages (kudils) for devotees
  • Annadhanam scheme feeding ~100 people daily; donations accepted via multiple modes.
