The Palani Murugan Temple, officially known as Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, is one of the most revered Hindu shrines in Tamil Nadu, India. Situated atop the Palani Hills in Dindigul district, this temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan and is considered the third of the Six Abodes of Murugan (Arupadai Veedu) .

Palani Arulmigu Shri Dhandayuthapani temple is one of the Six Abodes of Murugan. It is located in the town of Palani in Dindigul district, 100 kilometres (62 mi) southeast of Coimbatore and northwest of Madurai in the foot-hills of the Palani hills, Tamil Nadu, India.

🪔 Legend & Historical Background
  • According to traditional lore, Sage Narada gifted a divine fruit of knowledge (Gnana-palam) to Lord Shiva. He challenged his sons Murugan and Ganesha to circle the world thrice to win it. Ganesha circled his parents, symbolizing the world, and claimed the fruit. Hurt, Murugan renounced the world and settled at Palani as an ascetic.
  • The main idol was consecrated by the Siddhar Bogar, made of Navapashanam—a mixture of nine herbal minerals believed to possess therapeutic powers.
  • The original temple was built between the 2nd and 5th centuries CE by the Chera dynasty and later expanded by Chola and Pandya dynasties.

🏛️ Architectural Features
Perched at an elevation of approximately 1,500 feet, the temple showcases classic Dravidian architecture. The sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) is crowned with a golden vimana (tower), and the temple complex houses shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Sage Bhogar. Inscriptions in ancient Tamil script adorn the temple walls, reflecting its rich historical tapestry .

🏰 Architecture & Sacred Layout
  • Perched at approximately 1,500 feet, the temple displays a blend of early Dravidian (Chera) and later Pandya influences. Some walls bear the iconic two-fish emblem of the Pandya rulers.
  • A gold-plated vimana (tower) crowns the sanctum, embellished with sculpted figures of deities.
  • The inner ambulatory houses separate shrines for Shiva, Parvati, and Sage Bogar.
  • The sanctum idol depicts Murugan as a youthful recluse: bare-chested, wearing only a loincloth, holding a staff (dhandam). Only hereditary priests (Gurukkal community) have direct access to the deity.
